What You Need To Know
If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident in Ontario you must do the following:
- Remain or immediately return to the scene of the accident
- Give any possible assistance
- If requested, provide in writing your name, address, drivers license, insurance and name and address of the owner of the vehicle
- If the damage, injury or damage to the road the accident must be reported to the police
Police will try to get the accused person to explain (give a statement) what happened in the accident. They will caution them that anything they say can be used against them in court. If the accused person makes a statement to the police, the police WILL use it against them in court. It is always recommended that the accused calls us first before saying anything to police. You have the right NOT to say anything.

- A fine between $400-$2000
- Possible prison time up to 6 months
- 6 demerit points
- Possible license suspension up to 2 years
- Increase in insurance rates
